Is This the Right Time for a Career Change?
9 out of 10 Canadians who made a career change said they’re happier since switching paths.
These insights were shared in a survey conducted by Indeed Canada, that featured full-time workers from a variety of industries and education levels.
Another interesting finding was that about 38% of those surveyed had made a complete career change at some point!
So, if you’re looking for a career change, you need to be sure that it is the right move. How do you do that?
Well, there are certain signs that you should look for.
We’ve compiled a list of questions you need to ask yourself. If you realize that your answer to most of these questions is ‘yes’, then it may be time to move on to a new adventure.
Are you constantly feeling tired (or even worse … bored)?
Sometimes your body gives you clear signs. For instance, if you have headaches, stress, tension in your muscles, or are being lethargic, this may be because you’re getting tired at work.
Additionally, being bored at your workplace is another sign. While this doesn’t mean that every day should be exciting, you should generally have more ‘exciting’ than ‘dull’ days. If you’re not excited to go into work (even if it is virtually) that means that you may be working on repetitive tasks and may not be learning new things.
Is your job fulfilling?
If your job is fulfilling, it boosts your confidence and builds your self-esteem. You get to make positive contributions at work and you feel that you are valued.
Is the salary the only thing keeping you in your job?
This is one question that you really should think about. If you’re only staying in the job you have because of stability and the financial incentive – then this is probably the time to review your options.
Do you often find yourself thinking about an alternate career?
Have you thought about a different career during a rather long work meeting or found yourself reading up on other career options on your computer? If that’s the case then your heart is not where you physically are.
Have your friends or family pointed out a change in your personality?
When we’re unhappy at work, it usually impacts our personal lives. If your close friends or family have noticed a significant difference in your attitude or behaviour, this may have already started happening.
If you’re always stressed, unhappy and complaining – it’s a sign that you need to move on.
Once you’ve ascertained you are up for a career change, it’s always good to check if the industry you’re interested in is continuing to grow or not.
